SRINAGAR A militant affiliated with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen was killed in an encounter with government forces in south Kashmirs Shopian district on Friday.
Reports said that a joint team of armys 44 RR, SOG and CRPF laid a siege at Batpora, Narwani area early today morning.
A police spokesperson in a statement said that the cordon was launched following credible inputs about the presence of militants. The spokesman said that the encounter broke out soon after the joint team started searches in the area.
During the course of gunfight, a militant was killed and his body was recovered along with arms and ammunition, he said. The spokesman said that besides, the militants body, a hideout was also busted at the site of the encounter amid the search operation. Besides, arms and ammunition, utensils and a cooking gas cylinder were also recovered from the spot. The spokesman identified the slain militant as Sameer Ahmad Seh of Sugan Shopian.
As per police records, the slain was affiliated with proscribed outfit Al-Badar and had recently joined Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. He was wanted by law for his complicity in a series of attacks including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities, he said.
According to the police records, Sameer had history of crime cases and was part of groups involved in planning and executing attacks in the area, he said.
As per the records available with police, several crime cases were registered against him including Case FIR No.62/2018 of P/S Zainapora pertaining to killing of a civilian at Zainapora Shopian, Case FIR No. 65/2018 of P/S Zainapora pertaining to killing of 04 police personnel at Guard Post in Zainapora, Case FIR No. 52/2018 of P/S Zainapora pertaining to an explosion at Heff Shirmal Shopian, Case FIR No. 283/2018 of P/S Shopian pertaining to abduction & atrocities on a civilian, Case FIR No. 08/2019 of P/S Zainapora pertaining to killing of a civilian at Draggad Shopian and Case FIR No. 12/2019 of P/S Zainapora pertaining to recovery of arms & ammunition from Zainapora Shopian, the spokesman said.
After conducting all legal medico-formalities the body of the slain was handed over to family for last rites, another police officer said.
Meanwhile, reports said that thousands of people attended funeral prayers of the slain at his native village.
Earlier, youth took to streets and pelted stones on forces near the encounter site. The police and para military forces deployed in the area used tear smoke shells and pellets to disperse the protesters. In the forces action, at least seven youth suffered injuries, one of them identified as Shakeel Ur Rehman received pellets in his right eye.
Rehman was immediately taken to nearby hospital where from he was referred to SMHS hospital Srinagar for specialized treatment.
