PUNE At least 17 people were killed as a portion of the compound wall of a residential complex collapsed on shanties following incessant rains in Pune, police said on Saturday.
The shanties were built for labourers working at a construction site nearby, they said.
The compound wall collapsed around 1.45am on Saturday in the Kondhawa area, an official said.
Pune has been witnessing heavy rainfall.
Police, fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation, he said.
Three injured people were admitted at a nearby hospital, he said.
Pune district collector Naval Kishore Ram was quoted by ANI as saying the negligence of the construction company had come to light following the incident. He said most of the dead were labourers from Bihar and West Bengal. Ram assured the government would provide help to the victims.
