SRINAGAR The Mirwaiz Umar Farooq-led Hurriyat Conference Thursday asked the prime ministers of India and Pakistan to use the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek to break the ice and resume engagement between the two countries.
“We reiterate that political engagement is the most effective way to move forward and end the painful bloodshed in Kashmir. We urge India-Pakistan leadership to break the ice at SCO and engage with each other,” a statement quoted leaders of the amalgam as saying during a meeting of chaired by Mirwaiz here.
Hurriyat Conference is concerned and anguished over the continued bloodshed and killings across the Kashmir Valley, the statement said.
“People of Kashmir are suffering the consequences of the conflict for decades now,” the Hurriyat faction said.
The meeting unanimously agreed that the muscular policy adopted by New Delhi towards Kashmir for the past decades has failed in resolution of the issue and will not yield any results.
It reiterated that acknowledging the aspirations of the people of Kashmir and working towards the resolution of the lingering issue by New Delhi was the best bet for improving the situation in the valley as well as for the larger interests of peace and progress of people in South Asia.
They said that people of the entire region and especially Kashmiris were hopeful that the leadership of the neighboring countries would utilize this opportunity to de-freeze their relationship and set the ball rolling for engagement towards resolving all pending issues including Kashmir.
Senior Hurriyat (M) leaders including Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Bilal Gani Lone, Masroor Abbas Ansari, Muhammad Musadiq Adil, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza participated in the meeting.
