SRINAGAR Police Friday claimed to have arrested a youth who had gone missing from Ganderbal district from Kupwara district as he was on his way to join the Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit.
Shafat Yousuf Malik (25) son of Muhammad Yousuf Malik of Thune Kangan had gone missing from April 28 and his family had appealed him to return and had also urged people to help them trace him.
On credible input, Handwara Police arrested Shafat Yousuf Malik son of Mohammad Yousuf Malik resident of Thune, Kangan of District Ganderbal, a police spokesman said in a statement.
The youth was arrested at a checkpoint near Chowgal in Hanwdara and taken into custody, the spokesman said.
It is learnt that he was provided with arms and ammunition by a militant group and was on way to join Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. As such, he has been restrained from joining the militant outfit, he said.
Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from his possession.
A case FIR No. 87/2019 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Handwara.
Further investigation into the matter is going on, the spokesman said.
The family had filed a missing report with police station Kangan in April 30.
