SRINAGAR The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Thursday permitted authorities to conduct public meeting of candidates as well as training of election staff between 14 to 16 April in the Indoor Sports Stadium Srinagar.
A division bench of court comprising Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Tashi Rabstan passed the orders on an application by the deputy Commissioner Srinagar.
The counsel for the petitioner, advocate B A Dar submitted that the Election Commission of India has announced General Election 2019 and the election for the Srinagar constituency on April 18.
He submitted that several public premises have been requisitioned for election related work and sought leave of the court to use the Indoor Sports Stadium Srinagar for election purposes which include training of the election staff and holding of the meetings by the candidates of the political parties between 14 and 16 April.
This permission has been sought in view of order dated 11.11.2014 passed in PIL 20/2014, advocate B Dar, who is senior additional advocate general submitted.
He said that the election meetings and training of the staff would not be possible without having these premises. He submitted that the filing of the petition has been necessitated to ensure security of the participants in these meetings.
Dar also drew attention of the court to order dated 13 March 2018 and 09 October 2018 where by permissions were granted for organising Dusshera festival/function and Independence/R-Day celebrations in playgrounds.
In view of the above submissions, we are inclined to accept the prayer for interim orders. We therefore hereby permit conducting of public meeting of candidates as well as training of election staff between 14 to 16 April 2019 in the Indoor Sports Stadium, Srinagar, and allow the (Deputy Commissioner to consider the applications for the same, the court added.
