SRINAGAR Two militants were killed in a gunfight at Warpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.
Reports said body parts of slain were found by locals from the debris of a house razed to rubble during the gunfight.
Reports said that army’s 22 RR, CRPF and SOG cordoned off Warpora area at around 2:35 pm yesterday.
The gunfight broke out late Thursday night after the forces intensified searches and fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot.
A police spokesperson said that based on a credible input about the presence of militants in Warpora area, a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by police and security forces in the area.
As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight, he said.
In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the encounter site. Their identities and affiliations are being ascertained, the spokesperson said.”Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. Police have registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” he said.
Meanwhile, some body parts of the slain were found by the locals after the joint team of police and army withdrew from the encounter site whose bodies were claimed to have been retrieved by the joint forces along with as many weapons and other arms and ammunition.
When contacted SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal told local news agency GNS that a police team was rushed to the spot as soon as the information was received in this regard.
“There was one arm and some organs of the militants which were found by the locals and they have been now retrieved by the police party,” the SSP said.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted near the encounter site between forces and youth following the encounter.
Authorities have suspended internet services in Sopore and its adjoining areas since Thursday
