SRINAGAR A shutdown was observed on Monday, marking 35th hanging anniversary of JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat. The authorities also imposed restrictions in parts of downtown here and Trehgam, the native village of the JKLF founder, in northern Kashmirs Kupwara district. Bhat was hanged and buried in Tihar jail, New Delhi on Feb 11, 1984.
Reports said strict restrictions were imposed by the authorities in parts of this summer capital Srinagars downtown locality including Nowhatta, housing historic Jamia Masjid, and adjoining areas.
Locals said that contingents of government forces arrived early in the morning and placed barricades ate several place to disallow the movement of people.
Shops, private offices, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut across the valley while public transport was off the roads in most areas, reports said. However, private vehicles are seen plying in the parts of Srinagar.
Similar reports were also received from other areas of the Valley including Kupwara, Baramulla Bandipora, Budgam, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Anantnag. At Trehgam, the native village of Bhat, restrictions were imposed to prevent protests.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for complete shutdown on the hanging anniversary of Bhat.
In a statement here, the leadership had said, The sacrifices rendered by great leaders of Kashmir struggle Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afazl Guru are a glorious chapter of our history.
Delhi not only hanged them but has also kept their mortal remains under its custody till now. Their struggle and passion for the movement will always remain a beacon light for people of Kashmir, the leadership had said, adding, The way New Delhi hanged these sons of soil to satisfy the collective conscience of its people is a glaring example of oppression and tyrannical attitude. People of Kashmir will never forget these sacrifices and will keep demanding their mortal remains, the leadership said.
