SRINAGAR Anjuman Auqaf, Jama Masjid Srinagar has strongly condemned the desecration of mosque pulpit by a group of masked people holding flags of international terror group ISIS or Daesh on Friday.
Anjuman Auqaf which manages the affairs of Kashmir’s largest mosque issued a statement on Saturday giving details about the incident that took place late in the afternoon on Friday after, according to Auqaf when the namazis (Worshippers) had left.

In the meantime his associates videotaped the incident and the video has been uploaded on social media. A masked man can be seen in the video waving Daesh flag atop the pulpit of the historic mosque with some people shouting pro-ISIS slogans. A man can also be seen trying to bring the flag waving masked youth down.
“This clearly indicates that this incident was deliberate and planned, Auqaf claimed adding the incident has led to ‘shock outrage and deep resentment’ among people and deeply hurt their sentiments associated with the mosque.
“The attempt to desecrate Jama mosque by this lumpen group of hooligans whose identity is not known as yet as they hide it behind masks, nor the identity of those is known on whose behest they are indulging in these shameful acts, is strongly condemnable”, Anjuman Auqaf said.
Auqaf led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, who delivers Friday sermon from the pulpit, also said the incident shows ‘utter disregard of this group of miscreants’ for Islamic institutions, values and Islamic teachings. “Such elements not only malign the name of Islam but also abuse it”, the statement further reads.
Anjuman said it has taken strong note of this shameful incident and warned those “elements or agencies” behind this incident that people and Auqaf will not tolerate or allow anyone to violate the sanctity of the mosque and the pulpit at any cost. “Jama Masjid is the spiritual religious and political centre of the people of Kashmir and representative of our collective cultural heritage and any attempt to harm it will be dealt with firmly”, the statement said.
