SRINAGAR The polling percentage remained abyssal in south Kashmir with Pulwama and Anantnag districts recording 0.5 percent and 10.1 percent respectively in the fifth of the 9-phased elections on Thursday. Overall, the turnout was 33.7% in Kashmir with Kupwara district recording highest 42.5 percent.
According to the Chief Electoral Officer J&K, Shaleen Kabra, 85.2% polling was witnessed in Jammu division.
Giving district-wise details, Kabra said that Kupwara witnessed 42.5% polling, Bandipora 34.6%, Baramulla 32.9%, Ganderbal 20.3%, Budgam 34.8%, Pulwama 0.5 %, Anantnag 10.1 %, Doda 83.3%, Ramban 85.2%, Udhampur 82%, Reasi 89.1%, Jammu 88.9 %, Rajouri 82.8% and Poonch 84.5%.
Kabra said in the Phase-I of Panchayat Polls held on 17 November 2018, 74.1% polling was recorded across J&K including 64.5% in Kashmir division and 79.4% in Jammu division. In the Phase-II of Panchayat Polls held on 20 November, overall 71.1% polling was witnessed across the State with an overwhelming 80.4% polling in Jammu division and 52.2% in Kashmir division.
He said in Phase-III, the State witnessed a polling percentage of 75.2% which includes 55.7% in Kashmir division and 83.0% in Jammu division.
In Phase-IV, he said, JK witnessed 71.3% voting in Phase-IV with 82.4% electors exercising their franchise in Jammu division and 32.3% in Kashmir division.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam has conveyed compliments from Governor Satya Pal Malik to the civil and police administration for smooth, free and fair and peaceful conduct of Panchayat Polls amid challenging situation. He said it is heartening to note that the process is half way through and the credit goes to the divisional, district and police administration and all other concerned Departments for ensuring smooth polls.
Pertinently, Chief Secretary was, on the instructions of the Governor, camping in Srinagar to himself monitor the election process.
Several Youth Injured In Sopore
Several people received injuries during clashes in Botingoo Zainageer area of Sopore during the clashes which erupted as soon as the government forces deployed for elections were leaving the area.
They said the forces resorted to teargas shelling and pellets after they were pelted with stones, triggering clashes.
Reports said that several youth were injured in the clashes and three of them were rushed to a nearby hospital where from one of them, identified as Farhad Bhat of Botingoo, was referred to SKIMS Soura for further treatment.
