SRINAGAR While a 28-year-old youth, fired upon outside an army camp at Chattergam in central Budgam district on Friday, succumbed to wounds, former chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah condemned the killing.
After being critically injured, the youth, Ishfaq Ahmad Ganie son of Nazir Ahmad Ganie, was shifted to SMHS hospital late last night and was later referred to SKIMS. He was declared dead by the doctors at SKIMS around 1 a.m., said a relative of Ishfaq. A resident of Magraypora, Ishfaq was a carpenter by profession. Hundreds of people participated in his funeral at his native village.
Army issued a statement, claiming that Ishfaq was shot at by militants some 500-600 meters away from army camp at Chattergam.
When the army soldiers heard sound of firing, the Quick Reaction Team immediately rushed towards the direction of fire to find out what was happening. When the party reached the spot, they saw Ishfaq in a pool of blood, said Armys Srinagar-based spokesman, colonel Rajesh Kalia, in the statement.
He said Ishfaq had bullet injuries, one in head and the other in leg, and was immediately taken to Chhatargam hospital from where doctors shifted him to SMHS hospital.
The reports of individual lobbing a grenade on an army camp and the army retaliating are completely baseless, Kalia said.
Meanwhile, PDP chief and the former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti demanded an inquiry into the incident and also sought compensation to the victim’s family.

Earlier, Former chief minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah asked the government to end ambiguity surrounding the killing Ishfaq.

14-Year-Old Kulgam Girl Loses 2-Day Battle For Life
A 14-year-old minor girl, injured critically in a shootout in Khudwani area of Kulgam district on Thursday morning, succumbed to wounds at a hospital here, officials said on Saturday.
They said Muskan Jan of Wangud-Qaimoh was operated upon at the SMHS hospital in Srinagar and was in coma.
The 14-year old was declared dead by the doctors around midnight, the officials said.
A police official said that militants fired several shots at an army camp stationed in a part of the Rice Research Institute of Sher-e-Kashmir Agriculture Universitys (SKUAST) campus at Khudwani on Thursday morning.
The army retaliated, leading to a brief exchange of fire. Muskan was unfortunately caught in crossfire and sustained bullet injury, he said.
She was removed to a sub-district hospital in Qaimoh where doctors referred to the SMHS hospital in Srinagar where she was operated upon by the doctors.
Many Rounds Of Funeral For LeT Commander, Shutdown In South Kashmir
Srinagar: While thousands of people turned up to attend the funeral prayers of Lashkar-e-Toiba district commander Firdous Ahmad at Pulwama, people observed a spontaneous shutdown in south Kashmir on Saturday to mourn the killing of all the six militants at Bijbhera Anantnag.
While five other militants were buried yesterday, Firdous was interred at his ancestral graveyard at native Muchpuna village of Pulwama today.
Thousands of people from the adjoining and far-off places reached the native village of slain and participated in his last rites. . In all seven rounds of funeral prayers were held to accommodate the people before he was laid to rest at around 11:30 a.m.
He had joined the Lashkar-e-Toiba on May 17 last year and was elevated to the rank of district commander for Pulwama a few months ago by the outfit.
Meanwhile, all the south Kashmir districts observed a shutdown to mourn the killings of six militants killed in the gunfight with the government forces at Bijbehara on Friday.
Reports said that Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama observed shut down with all the shops and other business establishments remaining closed and traffic off the roads.
A large number of people visited to the residence of the slain militants to offer condolences to the families.
Besides Firdous, the militants killed included Azad Ahmed Malik Alias Azad Dada of Arwani Bijbehara, Basit Ahmad Mir of Pushwara Annatnag, Atif Nazar of Waghama, Unais Shafi Bhat of Takiya Maqsood Shah Bijbehara and Shahid Malik of Awantipora affiliated.
