SRINAGAR A number of traders were fined on Saturday on the eve of Eid-Milad by the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) as part of its drive to intensify market inspections.
In Hazratbal, two grocery shop owners, one mutton dealer, one food-store and three bakeries were penalized for using non-standard weights and measures. A penal sum of Rs 2500 was collected on the spot.
In addition to this one consumer complaint was also settled. A consumer had purchased a jacket for Rs 2500 and after wearing it for a couple of days he found it was defective.
But the shopkeeper had denied to take back the product and the consumer lodged a complaint against the trader in the through e-mail. The surprise inspection was conducted and it was found that the trader is offering for sale the jackets without the proper price tag. The trader was penalized and fined for Rs 5000 for selling jackets without a price tag.
It is the right of the consumer to know about the price and manufacturing details of the product with the contact number of the manufacturer. The erring trader confessed the lapse and returned the money to the customer as a suitable replacement was not available at the shop, said an official.
