SRINAGAR Inspector General of Police, Basant Rath, Friday snubbed newly elected Srinagar Mayor, Junaid Mattu, for his comment that there was a traffic mismanagement in the city. Basant, in response to Junaids Twitter post, said that, this was not his domain and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) should rather clear the encroachments on raods to avoid traffic problems.
The IG Traffic hit out at the Mayor after he tweeted that he has sought a review of traffic plans in the city in view of traffic management issues. Not your domain. Traffic diversion at Jehangir Chowk is a compulsion. The vendors have created a mess on Amira Kadal-HSHS-Maharaja Bazaz-LD hospital stretch. SMC needs to clear the mess, Basanth Tweted.
Earlier, Mattu had said that he had received numerous complaints of traffic mismanagement. Have received numerous complaints about traffic mismanagement issues in the city . I have spoken to the SP Traffic (Urban) and sought a review of current traffic diversions and plans. The SMC has been directed to help with decongestion of alternate routes for some relief, Mattu wrote on Twitter.
The heated exchange came a day after Mattu said that Basant was unwell after the latter termed him as cabbage over his remarks on wetlands. The Mayor had also come under sharp criticism for his comment recently that what were the wetlands needed for? in Srinagar. Basant said that such thoughts could only be of a cabbage.
Responding to a question on constructions coming up on wetlands, Mattu said, people see the building of a showroom and not 300 people working there. We will strike a balance between development and ecology but that does not mean putting a chastity belt around the city. Wetland Main Kya Karna Hai, Chadyoun Kou Dekhana Hai (What we need wetlands for, to show them to sparrows ?).
