SRINAGAR A demolition drive was launched by the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) in many areas of Old City here.
Many illegal structures were razed by the Enforcement wing of the LAWDA in the areas of Saidakadal, Ashaibagh, Hazratbal and Rainawari, Saidabagh, Saidakadal, Haji Mohalla Karam Shah Road, Abi Gurpora Rainawari and Hazratbal. During the drive the enforcement squad demolished at least 4 single storey structures and one room structure.
Officials said that the illegal structures were raised by the miscreants in clear violation of the High Court directions here.
During the demolition there was resistance from the locals of the area especially women folk, but demolition squad continued with razing down the structures, said an official.
He added that the public residing within the LDA jurisdiction are hereby informed that they shouldnt go for any sort of illegal constructions and encroachments.
The authorities of the LAWDA said that the enforcement team will continue with demolition of illegal construction.
Officials further cautioned the Tipper and Load Carrier owners not to carry construction material in the prohibited area of Dal and Nigeen Lakes. They said that ferrying of the construction material without permission will be strictly dealt with.
Authorities have earlier also taken measures to check the encroachments around the Dal and Nigeen lakes, which has however not yielded any results. In violation of State government decision that a Green Belt should be created around the Nigeen Lake and no construction is to be allowed within 200 meters of the lake boundary, the people have resorted to encroachments. The encroachments and un-authorised constructions around both the Dal and Nigeen lakes for want of effective surveillance by the concerned local authorities has continued unabated
We have received letters and complaints that besides the continuing encroachments around the Dal Lake, unauthorized construction is now also taking place along the Nigeen Lake, said an official.
