SRINAGAR Business worth Rs. 450 Crore was done during 36th India Carpet Expo in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh which saw presence of 350 overseas carpet buyers from around 38 Countries.
The 36th edition of India Carpet Expo, organised by Carpet Export Promotion Council at Trade Facilitation Center and Craft Museum, Varanasi was inaugurated on October 21 by Prime Minister Narandra Modi through video conferencing.
Buyers from US, UK, Brazil South Africa, and other European Countries visited the fair showing keen interest in handmade carpets and other floor coverings. The expo, which is organised under the aegis of Government of India focused on the highly labour intensive ‘Indian handmade carpet industry’.
With the participation of over 305 exhibitors, (only a handful from Kashmir) India Carpet Expo, one of the largest handmade carpet fairs in Asia, was a unique platform for the buyers to source the best floor coverings under one roof.
Ajay Tamta, Minister of State for Textiles said, Handmade carpet industry holds No. 1 Status in terms of value & quantity in export of handmade carpet. We are very glad that CEPC organizes this Expo twice every year to promote Indian weavers worldwide. Every year Expo generates huge amount of business. We assure our support to the carpet industry for their efforts for the betterment of small Manufacturers and artisans”
Tamta further said that after agriculture, textile is the 2nd largest employment providing sector in the country. Our weavers are the backbone of the industry. Uttar Pradesh accounts for approx. 60% of the total exports of handmade carpets, he disclosed
The Chairman of CEPC MP Sharma, said hundreds of enquiries and almost Rs. 450.00 Crore business was estimated from the 4 day Expo.
Government has set up a target of US $ 1592 million carpets & floor covering export for the fiscal year 2017- 2018, which he said shall be achieved. He further said India carpet expo is an ideal platform for International carpet buyers, buying houses, buying agents, architects and Indian Carpet Manufacturers & Exporters to meet and establish long term business relationship.
The Expo showcased the products of 270 reputed small, medium and large manufacturer exporters from states like U.P., Rajasthan, Haryana, J&K, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh.
