Night Raids, Dreaded CASO’s Initiated By Mehbooba Continue: NC

SRINAGAR — The night raids and dreaded cordon and search operations (CASOs) which were initiated by former Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, continue in Kashmir even today, said National Conference on Saturday.

Lashing out at the government forces for thrashing people at Trichal Pulwama, the party “said acts like these will further alienate the people from mainstream.”

NC’s South Zone President Dr Basher Ahmad Veeri and District President Pulwama Ghulam Mohiuddin Mir “expressed shock and disbelief on thrashing of people and reported migration of entire population from Newa township of  Pulwama.”
 

“People are being traumatized to leave their native villages. In PDP-BJP alliance, then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti initiated the dreaded CASO’s and night raids which continue even today. Now it seems that this has increased to an extent that entire population of hamlets is migrating,” said Veeri.

Mir said that the “collateral damage in terms of destruction to properties has become order of the day.”

“The basic human rights should not be curtailed during forces operations. It is hard to imagine the plight of people. Every now and then forces go berserk on the people. No one is spared including children, women, young and old. Everyone seems to be in the line of fire. A sense of anxiety looms large in south Kashmir.”

The leaders expressed concern over the “vandalization of public property” and thrashing incidents at Trichal.

“Incidents like these breed alienation among the people especially youth who have been already disenchanted by the previous PDP-BJP coalition.”
The duo “expressed shock and disbelief” over the killing of Firdousa wife of Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh in Shadimarg Pulwama. “The people are being treated badly. Even pregnant women aren’t safe, and the incident of killing pregnant women reportedly in cross-firing is shocking. It shakes ones conscience.” 
They said “incidents like these do not set a good precedence for a democratic set up and such incidents ought to be investigated thoroughly.”
The duo urged upon the incumbent Governor’s Administration to expedite an inquiry into the matter and “identify the culprits.”

Kashmir turned into theatre of war: PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday expressed serious concern over the escalation of violence in Kashmir stating that the rampant violence has turned the region into a theatre of war. 

PDP general secretary, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, condemned the “spree of arrests being launched against the youth in Valley” and  added that the “slapping of Public Safety Act against them has become rampant.”

He added that such “state actions besides being deplorable are inexplicable as well as there is no justification of pushing the youth of the state to the wall.”

Hanjura added that the crackdown “against the youth goes contrary to the claims being made by the Central Government and State Governor about taking the Kashmir’s younger generation into confidence and amicably address their concerns.”

He maintained that “if the present measures of repression aren’t stopped, the situation in the already restive Valley will turn more sultry as the wounds inflicted by the violence of the past 30 years are still reeking.”

“Comprehensive consultations are needed to resolve the issue of Kashmir through dialogue and reconciliation. PDP is confident that if sincere efforts are made to address the concerns of youth instead of suppressing their aspirations militarily, the process will elicit positive response from the other side and the state instead of turning into an inferno shall become a hub of tranquillity and peace. All we need is to rack our brains over such issues,” Hanjura said. 

PDP General Secretary also termed the frequent internet gag in Kashmir a major concern. He said that “such an action besides hitting the business fraternity hard is also affecting the student community at large.”

“There are thousands of students who are preparing for annual examinations in Kashmir. Internet is a primary source of information these days with exam dates and entry passes being directly downloaded from internet. The gag is proving calamitous for our students and it deserves remonstrance from all sides,” Hanjura said.
