Says Governor’s Rule No Alternative To Democratic Govt, Needs Restore People’s Faith In Democracy
SRINAGAR The Congress, which held a marathon daylong session of its leaders from across Jammu and Kashmir here on Tuesday, said its priority was to restore people’s faith in the democratic process even as it reiterated that there was no question of entering into coalition with PDP.
Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni held daylong deliberations with around 100 party leaders and legislators.
Stressing that the Congress’ policy was not to damage any other political party, state Congress unit chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir said: “Right now our priority is to restore the faith of the people in the democratic process.”
“During the last two years, developments have taken place which have shaken the confidence of the people in the democratic process. All of us need to work for restoration of that confidence among the people,” he said.
Mir said that Governor’s rule can never become a viable alternative to a democratically elected government.
“We appeal the state governor to ensure that all necessary steps are taken so that a democratic government assumes power in the state,” he said.
Congress leaders have already scotched rumours that the party was working to join hands with the Peoples Democratic Party for forming an alternative government in the state.
Azad told reporters that there is no question of any alliance with the PDP to form the government. Ms Soni said this was the first meeting of senior party leaders from Jammu and Kashmir to review the party performance in the past and new strategy.
”We would like to hear from the state leaders the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir, she said, adding, ”we will go to people with our agenda. It is yearly meeting to review the party strategy.”
Mir told reporters before the start of the meeting that it was the responsibility of the PDP and BJP to provide alternative government to the people in the state.
This was the first meeting of Congress after the collapse of the PDP-led coalition government following pulling out of BJP last month.
The state is under the Governor’s rule after no party or parties could stake the claim. However, PDP is still largest party with 28 MLAs followed by BJP 25, National Conference (NC) 15 and Congress 12.
Peoples Conference (PC), supporting BJP has two members, while CPI(M) one and four are independents in the House of 87.
Muftis Man Friday Plans Coup, Claims Karra
Former PDP leader Tariq Hameed Karra who is now part of Congress Party Tuesday claimed that a group of MLAs led by late Mufti Sayeed’s and Mehbooba Mufti’s most loyalist ‘Man Friday’ is all set to coble up another ‘unholy and unethical alliance’ with the BJP after Amarnath Yatra.
The game plan would be to hold a separate legislature party meeting and dethrone Mehbooba Mufti as leader of the legislature party and this independent group would be allowed to occupy separate seats in the Assembly by the Speaker, Karra was quoted as saying by CNS.
He said that simultaneously this independent group would form the government with the BJP. “Though it was a fait accompli after PDP became facilitator and collaborator with RSS, the irony is that the party president of PDP shall literally be thrown out of her own party by her most trusted lieutenants,” he said.
