SRINAGAR The 12th National Statistics Day was celebrated in the University of Kashmir on Friday. The programme was organised by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Field Operations Division, Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation, Government of India Regional Office Srinagar in collaboration with Department of Statistics, University of Kashmir.
June 29 is celebrated as National Statistics Day in order to create awareness among establishments and the people, especially the younger generation about the role of statistics in socio economic planning and policy formulation. It is the birthday of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, an Indian statistician who founded the Indian Statistical Institute and made significant contribution to the development of statistical system in India.
Every year the theme of Statistics Day is decided on focused attention. The theme for the 12th Statistics Day is Quality Assurance in Official Statistics.
The function was inaugurated by Prof Khurseed Iqbal Andrabi, Vice Chancellor (VC), University of Kashmir. In his address, the VC said that statistics will serve as the backbone of decision making only if the quality of the data is authentic and true. Illustrating the importance of Statistics Prof. Andrabi suggested that statistics should be introduced in all the departments of the University especially at the research level. Statistics is imperative for all Research Scholars, he said.
Altaf Hussain Haji (ISS), Director NSSO Regional Office Srinagar, said in his address that there are three main stakeholders for Quality Assurance namely government, establishments and households. He said that all the stakeholders have to play vital role in improving the quality of statistics collected or generated any other statistics. He added that these stakeholders have individual importance in order to generate statistics with truth.
Haji said that data can act as a powerful tool in management, decision-making and policy formulation only if quality has been maintained at the time of collection of data and hence there is a strong relationship between the nature of informant and the quality of the data which ultimately affects the result of the surveys.
Head of Department, Department of Statistics University of Kashmir Prof.(Dr) Anwar Hassan highlighted in his speech that statistics has an important role to play in every corner of life and it should be taught at every level of formal and non-formal education.
Prof. Musadiq Ahmad Sahaf, Dean Academic Affairs and Prof. Zafar Ahmad Reshi, Dean Research University of Kashmir also spoke on the occasion. Prof. Musadiq highlighted the need of introducing a mandatory course in statistics in all subjects in University of Kashmir and Prof Zafar Ahmad Reshi highlighted in detail the valuable contribution of statistics in research and development.
Scholars, students and officers of NSSO also presented papers on the theme Quality Assurance in Official Statistics on the occasion. The activities of NSSO and cultural programme on data collection prepared by student of Department of Statistics were also shown at the programme.
