SrinagarA court here on Wednesday sentenced a man from downtown Srinagar to life imprisonment for stabbing to death a female teacher from Humhama area of this summer capital of the state in 2008.
Special Public Prosecutor Abdul Aziz Teli told Kashmir Observer that Principal Sessions Judge Srinagar Rashid Ali Dar also awarded Rs three lakhs as compensation to the victims family.
The court had on Monday convicted the accused Irfan Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Fateh Kadal in downton Srinagar, for charges under section 302 (murder) and 341 RPC (wrongful restraint).
As per prosecution, on 10 July 2008, a report was lodged at police station Humhama that a girl namely Sakina Khan, a private schoolteacher, was repeatedly stabbed by Irfan outside her home at Gulberg colony, Hyderpora. The people living in the vicinity took the girl to SMHS hospital where she died.
A case FIR no 344/2008 was lodged against Irfan under section 307,341,309 RPC. The case was later converted to 302 RPC (murder).
The police investigation culminated into the filing of chargesheet before competent court which commuted the case to Principal Sessions Court. Irfan had claimed not guilty following which trial started which finally culminated to his conviction and sentence.
