SrinagarJammu and Kashmir skipper Parvez Rasool gave yet another reminder to Indian selectors about his off-spin prowess, snaring six wickets to help side bundle out hosts Kerala for 219 on the first day of their Ranji Trophy 2017-18 fixture played at St Xavier’s College Ground, Thumba on Wednesday.
Batting first, Kerala were dented big time by Parvez Rasool who recorded excellent figures of 6 for 70 in 26 overs to make it J&Ks day despite star batsman Sanju Samsons quality hundred.
After suffering two big innings defeats on the bounce, J&K exhibited a solid bowling performance to have their side in a position where from they can control the game.
Mohammad Mudhasir started the show for the visitors as the Hazratbal pacer rocked Kerala upfront with two early wickets. Left arm spinner Amir Aziz bettered J&Ks morning having Jalaj Saxena caught behind with Kerala tottering at 44 for 3. There was a mini recovery via Samson and skipper Sachin Baby but Parvez Rasool trapped his opposite number soon after lunch for his first wicket of the day to put the hosts on the backfoot.
Samson though kept going unfurling some quality strokes and in Arun Kartikhs company took score to 170 before Amir Aziz accounted for the latter.
Samson brought up his ton but wickets kept falling around as Parvez started to spin his web around Keralas later order. He had Salman Nizar caught for duck before castling Sijomon Joesph with Kerala score reading at 214 for seven. There was a major collapse for Kerala losing their last four wickets including that of Samson-all to Parvez- for just five runs.
Samson was star of the day for Kerala thanks to his 187-ball 112 laced with 14 fours and a six. His heroics though were undone by Parvez special aided by his teammates.
J&K went into stumps at 12 for no loss. The hosts would hope to dig deep on the second day to further their control on the game scripted by their skipper on the first day.
