SrinagarJammu and Kashmirs horror show in Ranji Trophy 2017-18 continued, suffering yet another innings defeat on Thursday. The latest one-second on the bounce-came at the hands of Gujarat on the third day of their Group B fixture played at Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat, losing the game by innings and 64 runs.
The hosts outplayed rudderless J&K in all three departments of the game with tourists shoddy batting performance on Thursday afternoon exhibiting another low of the season for Parveez Rasool-led side.
With a massive lead of 194 on a turning deck, J&K batsmen didnt apply themselves to be shot out for a nothing 130 inside 35 overs. None of the batsmen could negotiate the spin duo of Hardik Patel and Piyush Chawla with surety losing wickets in clusters. Parvez Rasool played a rash shot to be stumped off Chawla and never looked to occupy the crease. So did his top order. The lack of application and stomach to fight was evident from the beleaguered side that has been plagued by off-field issues and somewhat bizarre selections.
Gujarat, on other hand, were methodical with their approach and their big guns did come to the party when it mattered the most. The 22-year old left arm spinner Patel took a fifer and Chawla followed his first innings fifer with another four to take stuffing out of J&K batting unit.
None of the top order managed to reach 25-run mark with six players failing to touch double figures.
Earlier, Manprit Juneja and Chirag Gandhi showed J&K how it is done putting on 150 for the fifth wicket to bat J&K out of the game. Both the overnight not out batsmen mixed caution and with measured aggression to swell Gujarats lead. Juneja hit a measured ton while Gandhi batted freely on a deteriorating pitch to consume just 110-balls for 86 with the help of nine fours. Juneja finally fell to leg spinner Manik Gupta-his fifth victim of the innings- for a marathon 279-ball 131. Manik had figures of 5 for 143 from his 19 overs while Parvez Rasool took four wickets from 49 overs as Gujarat were dismissed for 455.
This is the second innings defeat suffered by J&K in as many games after it started the campaign with a draw against Saurashtra.
