SrinagarJammu and Kashmirs lean patch with the bat continued Tuesday, getting bowled out for 257 on the first day of their Ranji Trophy 2017-18 Group B fixture against Gujarat played at Surat.
The star of the show for the hosts was India discard and former Uttar Pradesh leg spinner Piyush Chawla who took a fifer to have Jammu and Kashmir bowled out for a below par score. After showing a good show with the ball, the home side openers negotiated ten overs safely to end the day at 15 for no loss.
On a batting friendly Surat strip, Jammu and Kashmir skipper Parvez Rasool opted for batting first. And, his decision proved to be a right one initially with his young opening pair of Shubham Khajuria and Ahmad Banday showing great temperament and skill to put on 99 for the first wicket. The duo encountered Gujarat pacers quite nicely and made sure scoreboard kept ticking over. The left handed Khajuria was the first one to reach the fifty but fell soon after reaching there to become Chawlas first victim of the day for 54. Pranav Gupta didnt make any impact as Chawla had him LBW for just 2 as J&K slumped to 103 for two in space of 15 deliveries. The promising Ahmad Banday continued on his good work to bring up his fifty having scored a ton in the first game of the season. Like his opening partner, he didnt add much after reaching the landmark to be dismissed by Chintan Gaja for 54. Parvez started his inning with a delightful cover drive for four, but Chawla had him LBW to a googly to have J&K reeling at 116 for 4. Parvez didnt look happy with the umpires decision as Gujarat started to take control of the game completely.
There was a mini recovery with Ian Dev Singh and Puneet Bisht adding 50 for the fifth wicket but both the seasoned batsmen went in a quick succession for 22 and 29 respectively to reduce J&K to 173 for 6. Both wickets fell to Hardik Pandey. Chawla then took two wickets off successive deliveries to complete his fifer as J&K were staring at a below 200 first innings score.
It wasnt to be, though with Bandeep Singh adding 35 for the ninth wicket with Manik Gupta (20), following it up with a brisk 50 with number eleven Mohammad Mudhasir. Mudhasir wielded his willow to slam 24-ball 35 punctuated with four sixes. Bandeep remained undefeated on a solid 33.
Besides Chawlas fifer, Patel took three wickets for the home side.
Brief Scores: Jammu & Kashmir 257 (Ahmed Bandy 54, Shubham Khajuria 54; Piyush Chawla 5-92, Hardik Patel 3-57) lead Gujarat 15/0 by 242 runs
