SrinagarA fresh braid chopping incident at Batmaloo Srinagar sparked protest on Wednesday while police have reportedly arrested a suspect. From past couple of days, several braid chopping incidents have been reported from Batmaloo area.
The protesters, mostly women assembled outside JVC Hospital Bemina and accused police of saving the suspects while thrashing those who raise their voice against these unabated incidents.
The youth blocked the road while police resorted to tear-smoke shelling to disperse them.
Protesting women said that on Tuesday night people chased some suspects in Bemina area, while in no time police appeared and took the suspects in their custody. She alleged instead of making the statements of suspects public, they thrashed people including women and even ransacked their houses.
Do police want that we should not raise our voice against these incidents. We want to know why police targeted us and our houses, she said.
Braid chopping incidents have sparked outrage across Kashmir with now students joining the protests. Govt Polytechnic College here in Gogjibagh witnessed an angry protest on Wednesday with protesters carrying placards and banners seeking the identification of braid choppers. They alleged that police has miserably failed to identify and nab the criminals who are playing with the honour and dignity of Kashmirs womenfolk.
Protests erupted while locals blocked Srinagar-Pulwama road after a fresh incident of braid chopping was reported from Karnalbagh Samboora area of South Kashmirs Pulwama district.
Residents said that a biker appeared during morning hours and chopped the braid of a young girl. The incident agitated people who disrupted traffic on the roads. They demanded action against culprits.
In South Kashmirs Malapora area of Pulwama district, the braid of a young girl was chopped off on Wednesday afternoon, sparking protest in the area.
Another braid chopping incident was reported from Bandi area of Uri where hair of an 18-year-old girl was chopped by miscreants when she had gone to a washroom outside her home in the early hours.
Civil Society to Hold Sit-in
Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies is organizing a one- hour peaceful silent protest at 3pm on Thursday at Partap Park Srinagar. Rising incidence of braid-cutting is nothing short of rape as it violates a woman’s body, her dignity, her privacy and her personal freedom, KCSDS said in a statement here on Wednesday.
The incidents have rudely shaken us and the entire society is in the grip of terrible fear. It has rendered otherwise fragile safety and security more and more fragile, it said.
Calling it a barbaric operation, KCSDS urged civil society to join the sit-in in order to register protest against this dehumanized ordered phenomenon and to reiterate our mission for the protection of the rights of women.
Every concerned person is requested to join the protest along with friends and family members both men and women, girls and boys to register your protest against this barbaric operation, the statement reads.
