SrinagarPolice on Friday produced challan against the 24 accused, 3 of them juveniles, in connection with the lynching of Deputy Superintendent Mohammad Ayub Pandith in Srinagar earlier this year.
Pandith was allegedly stripped and lynched to death by the mob near Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of old Srinagar on the night of Shab-e-Qadr, triggering an outrage in Kashmir. The challan was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar on Friday.
So far 23 people have been arrested, while three juveniles are presently out on bail, one accused was killed in an encounter and the investigation is still going on and more arrests are expected, SP Sajjad Ahmad Shah, who heads the SIT to investigate the lynching case, told Kashmir Observer.
We told the court that if we get more accused or evidence regarding the case, we will produce supplementary charge sheet, he said.
The police have produced challan against 24 persons including a youth, Sajad Ahmad Gilkar, who was killed in an encounter with government forces in June this year. In its Challan police has recorded the statements of 85 witnesses.
According to police, the DySP was posted at the access control of the mosque to prevent miscreants from vitiating the atmosphere so that people can offer prayers in peace.
All the accused have been charged under sections 302, 148, 149, 341, 392 RPC and 13 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in a FIR (51/2013) registered in police station Nowhatta.
Advocate Mushtaq Ahmad Dar and advocate Arzan Ahmad pleaded the case of the accused juveniles, and the copies of Challan were furnished to them. The case would be listed for next hearing on 11-10- 2017.
