SrinagarThe Department of Convergent Journalism (DCJ), Central University of Kashmir (CUK) organized the second annual film-screening event here Tuesday.
Three documentaries including Bhangaar Bazaar, Kotarbaaz and The Lake Town made by students of the department were screened on the occasion. The students of the Convergent Journalism, who graduated from the department this year, produced these films as part of their specialization in the fourth semester of the two-year academic programme.
Addressing the gathering, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir highly appreciated the students for making the thought provoking documentaries. He said the 15-minute documentaries have given a detailed insight about the themes and have created awareness among the audience about the whole subject. Prof. Mir asked the students to make documentaries on the contemporary burning issues in order to generate a debate in the society about it.
Registrar and Dean of the School of Media Studies, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, also applauded the students for making the documentaries. He said the medium of television has a huge impact on the people and the documentaries on diverse subjects help masses to understand the things better and put them in perspective.
Two students, Mr. Muqeet-ul-Amin and Mr. Khurshid Ahanger, produced Bhangaar Bazaar, a film about waste recycling business. It narrates the story of people involved in the process, including the businessmen, rag pickers and other skilled workers. Two other students, Mr. Ibrahim Moosa and Mr. Mohammad Dawood, produced Kotarbaaz, a film about pigeon fancying. It narrates the story of people who buy, look after and take up pigeon fancying as a hobby.
Three students, Ms. Sanna Mattoo, Mr. Muzamil Shah and Mr. Sadiq Hussain Midday, produced The Lake Town, a film about the life in the interiors of the famed Dal Lake. It looks into the self-sustaining society of Dal dwellers, who inhabit the interiors of the lake.
The documentaries were made under the supervision of Coordinator, Dr. Asif Khan. “The films are imperative in showcasing the reality of our society especially the issues which otherwise remain in oblivion,” said Dr. Khan while welcoming the guests.
The production staff of the department viz Executive Producer Mr. Rashid Maqbool, Production Manager, Mr. Mohammad Younis Zargar, and Production Assistant, Mr. Sameer Wani, assisted the students in their projects.
