SrinagarThe State Human Rights Commission on Wednesday come down heavily on the state government for providing a paltry compensation instead of Rs 10 lakh as recommended by it to a minor girl who has been rendered disable by bullets, terming its attitude inhumane and barbaric.
On the face of it, the attitude of government is inhumane and barbaric. A young girl became permanently disabled and cannot stand on her legs because of the injury sustained by firing of unknown gunman.
She has been given a compensation of Rs 25000 for which she cannot even get a good wheelchair, Justice (retd) Bilal Nazki, the chairperson of the commission said and directed Commissioner Secretary of the states Home Department headed by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to submit a detailed report before November 1 on refusing its recommendation of Rs ten lakh to the girl.
The chairperson ordered its office to send the order to Principal Secretary to Chief Minister for information.
The girl, Florie Jan, aged 13/14 years, has received bullet injuries in her neck and according the doctors, degree of her disability is 80%, her father Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Nepora Anantnag said in a petition before the commission.
“In practical terms, it would mean that she would never stand on her legs and has to remain dependent through her life. Her chances of marriage are almost zero, he added.
