Srinagar: On indefinite hunger strike from the last two days, the protesting Anganwari workers camped here at Press Enclave Tuesday attempted self-immolation while registering a protest against the government.
A woman protester tried to set herself ablaze. However, she was later rescued by the fellow protesters.
Around two dozen Anganwari workers are on a protest at Press Enclave. They are demanding increase in their wages at par with the other states like Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan.
On Monday, police foiled their protest after they tried to block the busy MA road. Several workers were detained during the protest.
The protestors vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met.
We demand enhancement of salary to Rs 10,000 per month for Anganwari workers and Rs 8000 to helpers, said Tasleema Subhan, President Anganwari Workers and Helpers Association.
