NEW DELHI: Akila Urankar has been elected as President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS). Ranker, President Business Standard Limited, was earlier Deputy President of INS.
Urankar replaced Somesh Mishra of Rashtradoot Saptahik, who was elected President of INS for 2016-17.
Jayant Mammen Mathew (Malayala Manorama) has been elected as the new Deputy President, Shailesh Gupta of Mid-Day as Vice President and Sharad Saxena of Hindustan Times as Treasurer of INS for 2017-18.
Urankar has spent 20 years of her career with Business Standard. She joined the publication in 1995 as General Manager of its Mumbai operations. In 1997 she was promoted to Vice President, Circulation and in 1999 took over as COO of Business Standard. She was elevated to the role of President, Business Standard in 2002.
Founded in 1939, INS acts as the central organization of the Press of India, an independent body authenticating circulation figures of newspapers and periodicals in India. It is an organization which plays a major role in protecting and promoting the freedom of press in India.
