WashingtonThe United States on Wednesday said it had formally sanctioned Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest Kashmiri militant group fighting to end Indian rule in Kashmir.
In a statement on its website, the US Treasury Department said it had listed the group as a counter- designated group, freezing any assets it may hold in the United States and prohibiting Americans from any dealings with it.
The statement said, The designation seeks to deny Hizbul Mujahideen the resources it needs to carry out terrorist attacks. Among other consequences all of Hizbul Mujahideens property and interests in property subject to US Jurisdiction are blocked, and US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transaction with the group.
The move came two months after the US Department of State declared the groups chief Syed Salahuddin a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
While India has hailed the US decision, Pakistan Foreign Office said the designation of individuals supporting the Kashmiri right to self-determination as terrorists is completely unjustified.
