SrinagarMore than a dozen candidates who applied for multiple courses under Prime Ministers Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) from Kashmir have accused All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) of ruining their careers by not including key courses in outside educational institutes.
The candidates said that few months back, the government issued online forms for scholarships under PMSSS and subsequently they applied. After successful registration, we got the print out of these forms and we went with a draft to our colleges for verification at various levels, said Sarfaraz Nazir Hajam of Sopore.
He said following the verification, a merit list was published in newspapers and his number was 6774. Thereafter, we were asked to appear for counseling at Amarsingh College, said the candidate, adding that he was allotted Mumbai University for Bachelors in Physical Education.
Sarfaraz said soon after selection, he rushed to Mumbai University along with the allotment slip with hopes of pursuing bachelors but his joy short lived after the said educational institutes management told him that the course in which he was selected is not taught there.
I was shell-shocked because I went there with high hopes and more importantly my selection took place as per norms and merit, he said, adding subsequently he approached the local AICTE officials at Mumbai.
The AICTE officials at Mumbai admitted the fault, he said. I was told that next year, they will take care of this, said Sarfaraz, adding: They take these things lightly. This is gross injustice and akin to playing careers of the students. I spent 30 thousand rupees on my travel to and from Mumbai but to no avail.
Other candidates of various streams including B.Tech and masters in physical education narrated similar story and lashed out at concerned officials for ruining career of Kashmiri students.
Meanwhile, when contacted, Rabia Baji, who is head of AICURD, NGO admitted that students are being sent back to Kashmir despite selection due to non-availability of courses.
There are dozens of students who despite getting selected are not being admitted in colleges and universities because the course they opt for are not taught in those educational institutes. This has happened after government ended NGOs role in the admission process, she said.
Pertinently, various NGOs including AICURD were facilitating admission process under PMSSS scheme. (GNS)
