TralArmy backed by paramilitary forces and J&K Police on Saturday launched an operation against militants in forests of restive Tral area of South Kashmir, killing at least three militants.
An official said that a gunfight erupted after forces cordoned off Gujar Basti in Wantiwen forests of Satura village.
He said that three militants were killed during the firefight with Armys 42 RR and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police so far.
All the slain militants belong to Jaish-e-Muhammad. A police official said that two militants were local whom he identified as Ishfaq Ahmed Khan of Handura, Tral and Mukhtar Ahmed Lone of Amerabad, Tral.
Police sources said Ishfaq had joined militantcy on 25th of March this year while Mukhtar had taken up arms only in last month (June15).
He said helicopters and para commandos were pressed into service to neutralize the militants who had taken shelter in dense forests.
Reports said that protests erupted at different places including Aripal, Wagad and Satoora against army action soon after the news of encounter spread. Tral township observed a complete shutdown in protest.
Reports said that scores of protesters sustained minor injuries during the clashes who were shifted to PHC Aripal for treatment.
Meanwhile, mobile Internet services were also snapped in Tral area as a precautionary measure.
