Shopian: Alleged vandalism by Army in South Kashmirs Shopian district sparked a massive protest while people blocked the Shopian-Kulgam road at Narwah disrupting vehicular movement for hours.
Residents who assembled on the road alleged that on Monday evening Army soldiers from 44 Rashtriya Rifles barged into scores of residential houses, ransacked property and thrashed inmates irrespective of age and sex. At least two motorbikes were also set on fire, residents said.
They were brutal and didnt spare even women and elderly. The forces personnel unleashed a reign of terror, CNS quoting a protester reported.
Residents said that the government forces entered into the village when people were preparing for Iftar.
They damaged everything they saw. Scores of parked private vehicles were damaged and even they hurled stones on the residential houses. We made announcements from the local mosque seeking help. Before villagers assembled to stop them, forces burnt a bike and beat some locals, they said adding that Army men apparently targeted the village for celebrating Indias defeat in ICC Champions trophy against Pakistan.
Reports said that Naib Tehsildar along with police and civil administrative officials rushed to spot to pacify the protesters. They assured investigation into the matter.
A police official from the district feigned ignorance and said he does not have information about the incident.
Srinagar based Defense spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia vehemently denounced the allegations saying that no soldier was involved in any ransacking, thrashing or damaging property in the village. (CNS)
15 charged with sedition
15 people have been arrested in Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly shouting pro-Pakistan slogans after its cricket team won the ICC Champions Trophy final by defeating India. They have been booked for sedition.
Pakistan had upset India by 180 runs to lift the Champions Trophy in London on Sunday.
Tension gripped Mohad town in Burhanpur on Sunday night after some people shouted slogans in favour of Pakistan and celebrated its cricket team’s win by bursting firecrackers at public places.
Security was stepped up immediately in the town to avoid any law and order problem.
The police later registered a case and arrested 15 people on Monday, Shahpur police station in-charge Sanjay Pathak said.
“There was a complaint that these accused celebrated Pakistan’s victory by bursting crackers and raising pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans,” Mr Pathak said.
The police booked the arrested persons, aged between 19 and 35, under sections 124-A (sedition) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, he said.
The accused were produced in a local court which rejected their bail applications and sent them to jail.
They were later taken to Khandwa district jail.
