If any more proof was needed that the BJP was not serious about the implementation of the Agenda of Alliance, it was recently provided by the union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu. In an interview, Naidu minced no words about the BJPs stand on dialogue with Hurriyat, saying this was the PDPs stand. It is the PDP which is saying that. Not the government. It may be their view, not our view, Naidu said. The minister was blunt, questioning the very institution of dialogue. How many years have we been talking? It has become a fashion for some people to make such demands and then be in news. Otherwise what is there in talks?Naidu questioned.
This should now effectively kill any hope of a dialogue. Interestingly, such repeated rejections of the talks have elicited no reaction from the PDP. The Chief Minister Mehbooba Muftis last ditch effort to prevail on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate talks with Hurriyat came to nought. The PDP seems now all but reconciled to the state of affairs. However, one could still understand if it were only about the BJPs rejection of dialogue that the PDP had resigned itself to. But the truth is that the BJP has so far refused to adhere to any of the agreements made in Agenda of Alliance, let alone take steps to implement any of them. This is something that has been a source of embarrassment for PDP in its core constituency in Valley where people blame it for its ill-advised alliance with the saffron party. The coalitions single most redeeming feature, its promise of the economic recovery has so far also been realized only in breach. The situation has often come to a point where while the political and ideological confrontation between the alliance partners has moved to the centre stage, the governance hasnt made much headway.
The PDP has been at the receiving end of the coalition. The party has seen complete erosion of its support base in Kashmir over the past two years. It is also not ready to break the coalition
However, the alliance is likely to go on regardless, much like the way it has so far. As things stand, the PDP has been at the receiving end of the coalition. The party has seen complete erosion of its support base in Kashmir over the past two years. It is also not ready to break the coalition. Out of power the party may find itself left out into the cold. The PDP, thus, is caught between rock and a hard place. The BJP, on the other hand, is in a win-win situation as being in power at the centre allows it a disproportionately greater say in the affairs of the state. But there is no denying the fact that the coalition has so far been a singular failure in the state. The agenda of alliance which formed its basis lies in tatters with BJP-led government at the centre refusing to act on its key understandings. The need for the two parties is to get their act together and rededicate themselves to the implementation of the agreements that formed the basis of their coming together or part ways. Devoid of its purpose, the coalition has only presided over the progressive deterioration of the situation.
