Awantipora: With an aim to highlight the role of nurses in society, a day-long International Nurses Day was celebrated at Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) on Friday. The day was dedicated to Florence Nightingalethe founder of modern nursingfor her pioneering contribution towards the profession.
The event was organised by Alamdar Memorial College of Nursing and Medical Technology (AMCNMT), Charer-e-Sharief, and Syed Mantaqi Memorial College of Nursing and Medical Technology (SMMCNMT), Awantipora.
Encouraging nursing students to lead from the front, Vice Chancellor IUST Prof. Mushtaq A. Siddiqi said, This is one of the most noble profession that you have chosen and you will be contributing towards the society like no one else. This profession will set you apart from the rest as you serve humanity.
Speaking on the occasion, Dean Academic Affairs, IUST, Prof Mushtaq A Qureshi said the university does not merely aim to produce nurses with good technical skills but also those who can serve humanity in a better way.
Students of both the nursing institutions should be trained in such a way that they would become role models for generations to come, he said.
Stressing the significance of nurses in a conflict-hit region, eminent psychiatrist, Prof (Dr) Mushtaq Ahmad Margoob, said, in a place like Kashmir, where depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are on rise, role of nurses becomes crucial in counselling of such patients.
Not merely medicines, but empathy with the patients can bring people of Kashmir out of depression. People need to wake up from slumber and help each other to fight mental illness, said Dr Margoob, who serves as Head, Post Graduate Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College, Srinagar, and Director, Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience, Srinagar.
Earlier, welcoming the guests, Principal SMMCNMT, Asmat Parveen, said nurses have a vital role to play in a society and we should encourage more and more youth towards this profession in order to serve the humanity.
Meanwhile, two mental health counselling centres were inaugurated at IUST. Besides, documentaries based on PTSD cases in Kashmir were screened on the occasion. A lamp lightning ceremony was also held in honour of Florence Nightingale.
Later, a student seminar was held on the theme, Nurses: A Voice to Lead- Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in which students from the two nursing colleges participated.
Among others, Muneema Parveen, Assistant Professor AMCNMT, Hassina Wani, Principal AMCNMT, Anjum Khurshid, Assistant Professor SMMCNMT, and faculty members and students of IUST were also present on the occasion.
