SRINAGAR: State Cricket Academy- Jammu and Kashmir’s maiden academy- will begin its proceedings formally with a 21-day coaching cum fitness training camp starting next week, a statement from the State Sports Council-custodians of the academy-said Tuesday.
The curtain raiser event beginning from May 8 will be exclusively for the U-16 age group cricketers.
The 21-day programme to be conducted at Srinagar’s Bakhshi Stadium where cricket academy is housed will be overseen by certified coaches and fitness trainers with an aim to inculcate budding cricketers with nuances of the game from young age, the statement quoted Secretary Sports Council Waheed Ur Rehman Parra saying.
As fitness has become a crucial part in any cricketers’ growth, Parra said, the fitness trainers at the camp intend to keep the players abreast with the latest trends in managing one’s body for optimum performance.
According to the statement, the registration forms will be available at the office of State Cricket Academy, New Administrative Block, Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council from May 2, 2017.
State Cricket Academy is the first of its kind initiative in the state after getting approval from the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Sports Minister Imran Raza Ansari last week.
The academy is still in infancy with work on the main area going on at a rapid pace. Those entrusted with the looking after the job claim once the work is completed it will be laced with modern facilities. It is learnt that the academy will have three turf wickets to begin with coupled with some cement wickets.
Director State Cricket Academy Mubashir Hassan- a BCCI licensed coach and former first class cricket- says the main aim of setting up an academy is to increase the talent pool and instill competitiveness amongst players from the word go.
As you know, most young players in Kashmir come out of nowhere and graduate to top flight cricket on their own. It is time we look after them from the young age and instill competitiveness among them so that they are ready to challenge big guns in the years to come, Hassan told Kashmir Observer.
Hassan-a household name in J&K coaching circles having already coached various age group sides of J&K- will look after the overall functioning of the academy. He will be head coach of the support staff as well.
The academy will be powered with top notch coaches and trained fitness personnel with an aim to impart knowledge to budding cricketers.
Having an academy will definitely increase the bench strength. When players are taught the nuances and various other things at young age, they are bound to compete at the top level. It is our first step to make J&K a cricket powerhouse. There is huge talent in this part of the world and all they need is direction and proper platform to excel, says Mubashir.
The fitness, Mubashir says, will be one of the major areas trainers will be working with the players.
Concept of fitness is yet to make any headway in J&K. We will be making sure players are made to understand the virtues of a fit frame. We will have top fitness trainers. We intend to introduce concept of fitness regimes and diet plans among the budding cricketers so that they are able to know their body well, says Mubashir.
