Srinagar: ICS Greens Wednesday beat ICS Whites in the first semi-final of Islamia College of Science and Commerce Inter-Group Football tournament to set summit clash date with ICS Oranges played at college football ground. Oranges had better off Reds in the second semis. Both the semi-finals proved to be cliff-hanger with none getting result in the stipulated 90 minutes only to be decided in a penalty shootout and tie-breaker.
The first semis saw Greens and Whites finding it hard to find the net with teams scoring a goal each in the allotted 90 minutes. Greens were in lead first up courtesy a goal from Faisal but Whites were quick to strike back with Rashid finding the net to make it 1-1. The stalemate continued till the final whistle prompting a penalty shootout.
The penalty shootout was also a close encounter with both teams head to head for most of the time but Whites players kept their nerves to take the first semi-final 4-3. Hyder, Hamid and Basit converted penalties into goals for the winning side and Youhan and Momin scored for Whites sides.
The second semi-final was a thrilling matchup between the two sides but ICS Oranges scored a goal in tie-breaker to book a place in the finals.
The teams played at a rapid pace with each vying for goals which didnt come easy. Reds were in goals column first up through Asrar brilliance before Farhan found an equalizer for the Oranges. The 1-1 scoreline didnt change when the final whistle blew. The consequent penalty shootout didnt separate two teams as there were five successful penalties from each end. For Oranges, Shariq, Farhan, Salim, Irshad, Zahid and Adnan converted penalties into goals which was matched by Asrar, Azan, Irfan, Zeshan and Shahid for Reds. The stalemate meant a tie-break finish which saw Oranges hold their nerves to score a goal to make it 7-6 in their favour.
The finals of the tournament will be played today at the college ground. The tournament is being part of colleges sports season organised by Department of Physical Education.
