Srinagar: Department of Convergent Journalism (DCJ), Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Wednesday observed World Press Freedom Day by holding an interaction session involving students and faculty of the department on varied themes related to the occasion.
The participants shared their thoughts on issues confronting journalism as an institution in a lively discussion.
Coordinator, DCJ, Mr. Asif Khan referred to the significance of the day and how it came into being. Khan emphasized on the role and significance of the newly formed Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) in safeguarding freedom of press in the valley.
Senior faculty member Mr. Shahnaz Bashir emphasised that the crux of the problem of press freedom is engendered in the tussle between the power of freedom and freedom of power.
Later, the students made posters and sketches on the theme of Press Freedom Day.
Other faculty members Dr. John K Babu, Dr. Nookaraju Bendukurthi, Ms. Sadaf Bushra, Dr. Suhail Ahmad and Mr. Rashid Maqbool highlighted the responsibilities of media practitioners and the challenges faced by them in discharging their duties.
A documentary was also shot by the students of semester-IV on the theme of freedom of press.
Appreciating the initiative, students said such interactive sessions help them understand the complex issues of the profession while they can express their thoughts through posters and sketches.
