PDP MLA Raises ‘Akhtar Hatao, Party Bachao’ Banner

Srinagar: Days ahead of parliamentary bi-polls a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator from Zadibal constituency in Srinagar Abid Hussain Ansari Saturday said that his campaign against senior party leader and cabinet minister Naeem Akhtar is based on facts and truth. He said that his sole objective and slogan is ‘Akhtar Hatao, Party Bachao’ (Remove Akhtar, Save Party).

“It vindicates my stand that not a single party leader has criticised or opposed my stand against Naeem Akhtar. If people like Akhtar will stay in the party, the party is bound to suffer,” Abid Ansari told reporters at Zadibal.

He alleged that  Nayeem Akhtar ruined the Department of Education. He said that the employees from this department celebrated his removal. “Like employees from Education department now the contractors and the PWD employees will hit to roads and will blame Akhtar for mess which he is going to create in the department now,” Abid claimed.

Responding to a question, Abid said that it will not be a rosy walk for PDP in coming Parliament elections. “If you want to win the elections then you have to work for the people and keep your doors open to them. If you act like Naeem Akhtar, shut your doors for people then you are bound to suffer. Don’t forget, Dr Farooq Abdullah is a seasoned politician and it will be very difficult for the party to defeat him,” he said and added that in South Kashmir also PDP will face a tough competition.

Abid is uncle of Molvi Imran Raza Ansari, a Shia leader, who resigned as cabinet minister earlier this year.

Re-induction of PDP senior leader Altaf Bukhari, in the cabinet and following reshuffle of portfolios in February, exposed the fragility within PDP, when two senior cabinet ministers Basharat Bukhari, divested from the portfolio of Revenue, Rehabilitation and Relief and assigned Horticulture and Imran Raza Ansari, Sports and Science and Technology Minister resigned.

PDP tried to persuade aggrieved legislators with chief minister Mehbooba Mufti stepping in. While Basharat relented Imran has so far stood his ground.

“First we have to understand, why are people resigning. Why has it come to this? If PDP as a family is destroyed, the reason would be Akhtar,” Abid had said.

Akhtar is a member of legislative council and has not fought the elections. He has now been assigned the portfolio of Public Works. Earlier, as education he often had a brush with controversies.

“I have understood that Naem sahib doesn’t work for the interest of party but is hell bent at the behest of some agency to destroy PDP to the core,” accused Abid, who also challenged Akhtar to fight an election against him.

“I will leave my assembly seat and leave Kashmir, if Akhtar manages to get 200 votes against me,” challenges Abid. Abid demanded that Imran as ‘leader of a big community’ should be assigned portfolios as per his religious standing.

“Imran sahib should have been given Education, Rural Development or Public Works Department as was promised by the chief minister herself. Now you cannot backtrack on promises. Let Naem sahib handle sports as he has no commitment and never has to face electorate,” said Abid.  According to Abid, the chief minister had promised that there will be no portfolio change and if there is any Imran Ansari’s portfolio will be changed as well.

“You cannot ask an MLA to gather people when there is a function in Srinagar and prefer Naem when it comes to portfolios,” said Abid.
