SRINAGAR: In an unprecedented development, Syed Ali Geelani led Hurriyat Conference has faced internal revolt.
Hurriyat Conference (G) sources and media reports on Tuesday said that Shabir Ahmad Shah has resigned as Secretary General of the pro-freedom camp. Shah leads Democratic Freedom Party (DFP).
Termed as a major development, Shabir Shah along with his long time associate, Nayeem Khan, and other resistance groups had joined Geelani in mid-2015 and onNovember 25, in a meeting, octogenarian Geelani had announced Shabir Shah as Secretary General of the pro-freedom grouping. He was being assisted by Gh Nabi Sumji and incarcerated Muslim League chief, Masarat Alam.
The dissent was growing for long now, a top Hurriyat Conference (G) activist revealed, Shah was behind bars for most of the time and he felt that he was being sidelined (from decision making).
Although Shah has maintained that his party will continue working for cause under Hurriyat Conference (G) banner, however, his party has been seen working independent of any program chalked out by Geelani led group or joint resistance leadership.
It all started in 2016 when Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik came to Hyderpora and joined Geelani, the activist said, Shabir Shah felt he was not taken on board before the top three resistance leaders decided to work jointly. It is being seen as a revolt, the activist said.
However, Shah has asserted that he was not able to perform his duty because of continuous detention. It was after long time that Shah addressed a massive rally in Tral last Friday, however, he was put under house detention next day when a meeting of Hurriyat Conference (G) was scheduled at Pirbagh.
It may be recalled, Shabir Shah left the Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and he constituted another grouping of the pro-freedom groups and named it Hurriyat Conference JK, however, after months of deliberations, Shabir Shah drove to Hyderpora and formally joined Geelani in 2015 September.
Shah had joined Hurriyat Conference (M) in January 2008.
