Sopore: A viral infection has gripped school students in Sopore town of Baramulla district with the hospital in the area receiving 200 patients daily for treatment, sending parents into a tizzy.
However, doctors said that the disease can be controlled by home care and medication and the people need not panic.
The parents said that after re-opening of schools following winter vacation, their children are suffering from fever, sore throat, cough, abdominal pain, vomiting and headache. Doctors have told them that the children have been infected by viral disease called viral bronchitis.
We are attending to at least 350 patients in a day. Out of which about 200 are suffering from the viral syndrome. Nearly 20-30 patients need admission for hydration, fever control and fever-oil convulsions to combat the infections, Dr Suhail Naik¸ noted paediatrician at Sub District Hospital Sopore told KNS.
He said that the infection is affecting the children as it disease is highly contagious.
The doctor said that parents should not panic as the infection can be treated and controlled by domiciliary measures (home care).
We have made two wards feasible in SDH Sopore to treat these patients. So far not a single patient has been referred to any other hospital yet as we are treating the patients well. Parents should not panic about the infection, he said.
The pediatrician also advised the patients to give their children tepid sponging, oral paracetamol, lots of fluids.
Some patients need to get hospitalized particularly those who through convulsion develop muscle weakness, fever of 102 -103 and dehydration, he said.
Chief Medical Officer, Baramulla, Dr Bashir Chalkoo when contacted said that so far no such viral epidemic is reported but I will check about it. (KNS)
