J&K Institute of Mathematical Sciences was inaugurated in 2013 by the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. It was set up in a newly constructed building at Amar Singh College, Srinagar. The institute was setup with an aim to conduct research in mathematical sciences and dissemination of findings to the related sectors for use and benefits. The institute was to be guided by vision to inculcate scientific temperament, the spirit of enquiry and innovation in students whereas the Mission was to establish an institute of international repute by linking various institutions of the country and collaborating in research and generation of skilled manpower in mathematical sciences by imparting better training to young scientists, equipping them with the latest tools and techniques.
The institute not only had to deal with higher education but had to begin right from the school level. It shouldered the responsibility of International Mathematical Olympiad in which very few students from our state qualify. It was a noble idea and had the power to revolutionize the whole concept of mathematics in our state, which is lagging far behind in the subject.
The unfortunate part is that it has become a victim of official apathy and even four years after its launch the government has failed to give it wings. The government hasnt been able to execute the idea of setting up a world reputed mathematical institute well. The institute has been reduced to that of an event managing department which organizes a number of programs like Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS), extension lectures, counseling sessions, workshops and entrance tests for various academic and professional institutions.
Research which was its basic aim is seen nowhere in the running of the institute. The present modus operandi of the institute is to motivate students to take up mathematics at higher levels of education, making them dream higher but without providing any meaningful platform to convert these dreams into reality. It is next to impossible to produce the much needed men and women of mathematics by going this way.
There must be a serious concern over the issue of deteriorating condition of higher education in our state. Its sole aim is to distribute as many as degrees it can. It has no place for research and that is why people from our state havent made any great contribution to any field. Our government has been instrumental in discouraging the people of its state in research. J and K Institute of Mathematical Sciences is a live example of this discouragement. Now its website, www.jkims.org too doesnt exist. It is a failed endeavor.
