Srinagar: Former chief minister and Working president of National Conference Tuesday said that the state government rather than issuing threats should take measures to deal with the protesters who march toward gunbattle sites during security operations.
The government should deal with the people who disrupt security operations during encounters by counselling them rather than threatening them, Omar told reporters after the National Conference held core group meeting on by-polls today.
Even after Army chief warned the protesters and called then anti-national, more people came out of their home and swarmed to the encounter sites. By threatening and warning people, the issue cannot be addressed. The government should realise the sentiments of the people and take measure to address them, Omar said.
Hitting out at the state government, Omar said when militancy is posing a challenge in the state the government was slashing the security of National Conferences former legislators and ministers.
The Election Commission of India should ensure secure atmosphere for conducting elections.

The former chief minister also said that the government has failed to restore Srinagar-Jammu highway for traffic movement and arrangement for stranded passengers.
The restoration of traffic on Highway has exposed the callous approach of the government, he said.
