Srinagar: Police on Monday foiled the protest march of All Jammu and Kashmir Casual Daily Wagers Forum (AJKCDWF) and detained scores of its members after they tried to march towards Lal Chowk.
The protesters assembled inside the Srinagars Press Enclave and chanted slogans against the government. The protesters were demanding action against the officials whose negligence led to the death of PDD labours so far.
Sajad Ahmad Parray, the president of the PHE daily wagers said that the Budshah Chowk incident was not the first but more than 300 similar incidents have occurred in the PDD department so far. In more than 300 incidents, at least 150 PDD labours or employees lost their precious lives while more than 100 become physically disabled, he said.
He said that todays protest is aimed to ask the government that the family members of the labourers who either lost their precious lives or become disabled must be provide with jobs.
Parray said that the government has failed to take action against the officials whose negligence led to the death or disability to the PDD labours. Let the government make the list of the negligent officials public who are directly or indirectly involved in the death or disability of the PDD labours, Parray demanded, adding that the government must look into the matter and the negligent officials should be dealt with strictly.
He said that the government must not ignore the plights of their families. Besides, the government should also regularize the casual labours who are working the deportment from several years on meager amount, Parray said.
Meanwhile, as soon as the protesters tried to march towards the business hub Lal Chowk, the police swung into action and detained scores of its members. (KNS)
