Srinagar: Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat patriarch, has been tasked to continue as chief of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) for one more year by the party on Sunday.
In a meeting held at Hyderpora residence-cum-office of Geelani, some members of TeH advisory council met yesterday during which Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai moved a resolution to amend TeH constitution. Sehrai was Secretary General of TeH up to January 31, 2017.
TeH said that it could not held its mandatory three-yearly elections to elect its chairperson and advisory council due to 2016 uprising and then arrests of its members. The pro-freedom organization came in to being in 2004 on August 07.
The tenure for chairman and executive was extended for one year, a statement released by TeH said yesterday evening.
“This is first amendment to TeH Constitution since it was formed way back in 2004,” sources said.
TeH was formed when Geelani and Sehrai parted ways with Jama’at-e-Islami under an agreement with later.
To facilitate the smooth functioning , a resolution was moved by Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai in which it was suggested to extend the tenure of chairman and its executive body. The move was supported by all members and latter amendment in this regard was permitted, the statement said. In a unanimous voice, all members requested Syed Ali Geelani and executive council to continue and lead party.
Geelani in his presidential address said, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat is not mere an organisation but a movement and a revolution. We are striving against Indian occupation, unification among Muslim & adoration of Islam. The social, political and religious aspects of Tehreek-e Hurriyat are unique and since its inception presented unparalleled sacrifices. Our party activists during detentions are exhibiting exemplary persistence in jails and interrogation centres.
