New Delhi: The Union Railway Ministry has agreed to allow vehicular traffic in Qazigund-Banihal railway tunnel during inclement weather and snowfalls on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the world.
An official statement issued here late this evening said that the Qazigund-Banihal railway tunnel would also be used for the vehicular traffic during inclement weather and snowfalls.
This would ensure timely movement of passengers and vehicles who often get stuck on the national highway for days due to blockade during bad weathers, it said.
It said Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is in New Delhi, on Friday took up the issue of using the tunnel with Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu, who assured all support and cooperation.
Prabu agreed to the suggestion of using the railway tunnel for movement of vehicles during inclement weather.
Modalities in this regard would be worked out shortly, it said.
The statement said railway tunnel also has an inbuilt parallel road stretch which Mehbooba Mufti today sought from Prabhu to be used for facilitating traffic movement on the highway.
