Anantnag: Doctors at the District Hospital Anantnag have removed five iron nails from the stomach of a 45-year-old patient .
The patient (Name Withheld) was admitted in the district hospital Anantnag with Gastrointestinal bleeding (GI bleed).
The endoscopic examination revealed that there were some iron nails in his stomach.
Five nails measuring 4 and 3 inches have been removed in two consecutive days and two more are yet to be removed, said doctors
The Surgery was conducted by Dr. Muhammad Shafi Hakeem (Gastroenterologist), Dr Azad Malik (Surgeon specialist), Dr. Hilal (Neurologist) and Dr. Nasir Malik (Anesthetist).
This is the rarest of rare cases observed in District Hospital rather in entire Valley, said Medical Superintendent, Dr. Majeed Mehraab.
When asked how the nails actually reached inside the patients stomach, Dr. Mehraab said the history of the patient revealed that he was suffering from mental retardation with seizure disorder and was a drug addict.
The family members of the patient said, whenever he would get a seizure, his parents would keep an iron nail between his teeth so to prevent him from biting his tongue. They had been advised by the local quack to do so.
Doctors said that the patient has miraculously escaped perforation of the stomach.
