Srinagar: Residents from Karnah area in district of Kupwara on Saturday held a protest at Press Enclave here demanded to start work on a tunnel at Chowkibal.
They said the area remains disconnected for several months in winters, causing immense hardship to the people of the area.
The only road connecting the area with district headquarter Kupwara, has to pass over the Sadhana Top that remains under snow for long periods and government therefore announced tunnel from Chowkibal to other side that would end this winter blockade of the area, Shameem Ahmad Mughal said.
He said the blockade of the only road link with rest of the Kashmir during winter has immensely hit the economy as well as health care. Recently a sick patient could not move to Srinagar for specialised treatment because of the road blockade, he said.
The locals said that they had been promised construction of a vital tunnel many times but so far there has not been any work. (CNS)
