Srinagar: Air traffic from Srinagar International Airport remained suspended for the second day today due to poor visibility following cloudy sky since this morning after more than a feet snowfall on the runway.
No flight could take off or landed at the Srinagar airport today due to very poor visibility, an official of the Airport told UNI. However, he said, if weather improves decision to resume air traffic will be taken in the afternoon.
He said snow on the runway was being cleared and it will be ready by 1300 hrs, when decision about resuming air traffic will be taken.
All incoming and outgoing flights were cancelled yesterday due to snowfall and poor visibility, he said.
Those associated with tourism have expressed concern over the cancellation of air traffic at a time when arrival of guests from different parts of the country and abroad was picking up following heavy snowfall after long dry spell.
We had booking from Delhi and Mumbai for yesterday and today but due to cancellation of air traffic, the guests could not come, said Abdul Gaffar, a houseboat owner.
Similar views were expressed by hotel owners, horse wallas and sledge owners who have suffered huge losses during the summer when tourist arrival declines to almost zero due to unrest in the valley.
Traders and tourist associations have reiterated appeal to Central government to install equipments at Srinagar airport so that planes could land even during night and poor visibility.
