SRINAGAR: As life came to a grinding halt due to moderate to heavy snowfall in Kashmir, authorities today said that they have deployed 129 snow clearance machines across the valley, out of which 20 have been deployed in Srinagar city.
However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as snow was not cleared from majority of the road in Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, which witnessed heavy traffic jam due to slippery conditions despite less number of vehicles plying on roads.
Even though authorities claimed that all the Valley hospitals and tertiary care units are working as usual and all routine staff is stationed at their places of deployment, the Superintendent of Bones and Joints hospital said that the road leading to the hospital and the premises of the institute remained under snow despite repeated requests to the concerned authorities to clear the roads since morning.
An official spokesperson said that Mechanical Engineering Department and Road and Buildings (R&B) department have deployed 129 snow clearance machines across Kashmir Valley out of which 20 have been deployed in Srinagar city itself.
He said the snow clearance machines will be stationed at specific places of operation till the respective road stretches are thrown open.
All the Valley hospitals and tertiary care units are working as usual and all routine staff is stationed at their places of deployment. There is adequate supply of medicine available at these hospitals and even all ambulances are ready, she was informed, he added.
He said that adequate ration is stored in Kashmir valley by the concerned Department and Food Corporation of India and fuel stocks have been dumped for about 21-28 days.
Due to the present snowfall around 25-30 per cent dried up water supply sources have recharged, he said, adding that all the water supply schemes are operating as usual and the bleaching chemicals are also adequately stocked.
The spokesperson said that the PHE Department has kept 104 water tankers ready besides the usual water supplies.
