Srinagar: A top commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was killed and a policeman was injured in a fierce encounter in the central Kashmir district of Badgam, official sources said.
Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants, security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint operation in Machwa area on Srinagar-Charar-e-Sharief road in Badgam district in the wee hours this morning, sources told UNI.
They said as security forces were sealing the particular area, the militants opened fire and in the retaliatory fire, a militant was killed. A policeman was also injured in the encounter, they added.
The slain militant was identified as Muzaffar Ahmad Naikoo alias Muza Moulvi, a resident of Sopore in Baramulla district.
Naikoo was most wanted LeT commander, they said, adding that some arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.
Local residents said they heard explosions and heavy firing for some time in the wee hours this morning.
However, no one was allowed to move out their houses, they said, adding that this morning, it was reported that a militant has been killed.
