Srinagar- One militant was shot dead in the central Kashmir district of Budgam, official sources said here today.
They said on a tip off about the presence of militants, security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint operation in outskirts of Srinagar city in Muchua area of Bagh-e-Mehtab in the Budgam district in the wee hours Friday morning.
As Govt forces were were sealing the locality amid heavy snowfall, militants opened fire, they said adding in the retaliatory fire a militant was killed.
The slain militant was identified as Muzaffar Iqbal Naikoo alias Muza Moulvi, a resident of Sopore in Baramulla district.
Thousands join funeral
Thousands of people Friday attended the funeral procession of slain Muzaffar Iqbal Naikoo who was killed in a mid-night gun fight in Srinagar outskirts.
Braving incessant snowfall thousands assembled at the native place of slain Muzaffar in Batpora Sopore.
As the body of slain Muzaffar reached his native village, women in hoards came out of their houses and showered candies on his body.
Mourners later took out massive anti-India procession raising pro-freedom slogans.
Later clashes erupted in the area with youths pelting stones on government forces.
Forces retaliated resulting in intense clashes. Massive teargas shelling failed to deter protesting youth for hours.
Meanwhile, the locals of Muchua expressed suspicions about the encounter. They said, Firing started at around 11:25 pm and after a number of shots forces left from the spot leaving an unidentified body there.
